You have brushed your teeth. You have a glass of water
and you've had a big hug. Now it's time to go to sleep,
Mother Bear said, as she covered up Little Panda.
She was almost out of the room when Little Panda said,
Mom, I need a kiss too.
Of course, dear, now go to
sleep, she said softly.
Mom tiptoed down the hall. She settled into her favorite chair.
Mom, Mom, Little Panda called. May I sleep with one
toy friend?
Yes, dear, she chuckled.
After a couple of minutes, Little Panda said loudly,
Mom, two friends might be better.
He snatched his stuffed lion by the tail.
One, two, he counted.
Mom was half asleep when she heard Little Panda say,
Mom, I really need three friends to sleep with me.
He counted, One, two, three toys.
Then Little Panda saw one of his best toys sitting alone.
Mom, he called, I'm going to get my old cat too.
He counted, One, two, three, four.
Little Panda looked around again. His rabbit was
smiling at him.
Five friends would be nice, he said. One, two, three,
four, five. That's not too many.
Just as he was getting sleepy, Little Panda spotted his clown.
Mom, I'm just going to have one, two, three, four,
five, six friends to keep me warm.
Was six enough? he thought. Maybe not.
Little Panda's toy frog looked sad.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, he counted.
Mom, we are all warm and sleepy now.
I can't leave him, he said to himself as he pulled up
his toy puppy by the ear.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. That's good.
Mom, Little Panda called, I'm almost asleep.
His mouse was watching him. Little Panda slid down the
covers to get her.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
counted Little Panda.
Only nine, Mom, he called.
Little Panda spied one last friend.
He counted, One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,
nine, ten.
Mom, I only have ten.
Mom had been asleep. She woke suddenly.
Ten? Ten what? she asked sleepily. She slowly rose to her
feet and shuffled down the hall.
Mom peeped into Little Panda's room.
She counted ten little heads poking out from the
covers, but none of them were Little Panda's.
There was no room for him.
Mom rubbed her eyes. She looked all around the room.
Where was Little Panda?
Then she saw him.
Little Panda was in the empty toy box fast asleep.
